Online exhibition “From punch cards to cloud. The history of digital storage media” from 15 December

Almost everyone uses them: clouds, USB sticks, hard drives. Today, incredibly large amounts of data can be stored on the smallest of devices. But how was data stored around 60 years ago, and how did it all begin? In the online exhibition “From the punch card to the cloud”, 20 objects and archive materials cover the history of digital storage media and their use.

With digitization, more and more types of media content were stored digitally: Images, text, video and sound. Meanwhile, the amount of data worldwide is increasing rapidly: the annual data volume for 2025 is estimated at 175 billion terabytes.
